Arturo’s Pizzeria – a Real Slice of New York!

It was a warm summer Saturday night and we decided to take a ride on the bike. We headed into Manhattan and Greenwich Village.

We had some pizza in mind.

Arturo’s on W. Houston Street is a true slice of New York. The place is warm, friendly and funky. The pizza is coal oven and fantastic.

Arturo’s  has been around since 1957. It is noisy and fun. A neighborhood joint. For me, the most desirable spot is a place at the bar. Here you can get a glass of some terrific wine and chat up the people on the surrounding bar stools. We have met some interesting folks here.

You can order some traditional red sauce dishes or, and this is my favorite, you can order Arturo’s pie.

Sausage, mushrooms, peppers and onions on a delicious coal oven crust just dripping in wonderful cheesiness. Amazing!

And while you are savoring this fantastic pie you can listen to some live jazz. Yes! that’s right, Arturo’s has a three piece jazz band tucked into a corner between the kitchen and dining rooms.

A New York gem. Whenever someone is in from out of town and needs a suggestion as to where to get some authentic New York pizza, I always recommend Arturo’s. It is unique and a great example of New York style in both taste and atmosphere.

I always get a kick out of the bathroom which is old school New York apartment. There is only one and it is unisex. Black and white tiled; the tub is included.

So if you are looking for a place with great pizza and great old fashioned style- this is the place to come. You will definitely have a wait and it can be hard to hear conversation.  The back dining rooms are cramped and you will more than likely end up talking to your neighbors. The service can be slow but the staff is genuinely helpful and hard working.  You can get a table outside in the warm weather but the place to be is on the inside where it’s warm and inviting and they may not know your name but you will definitely feel like you’ve come home.

You can find Arturo’s at 106 West Houston Street, New York NY 10012
